Dr. Partap Chauhan, founder and director of Jiva Ayurveda, emphasizes that water, viewed as medicine in Ayurveda, should be consumed mindfully and strategically rather than forced. He recommends five specific times for optimal water intake: a glass of warm water upon waking (Usha Paana) to flush toxins and aid digestion; a small sip of warm water 10-20 minutes before a meal to prepare digestive "agni"; a small glass of warm water an hour after a meal to facilitate nutrient absorption; drinking when genuinely thirsty to avoid imbalancing Kapha energy; and a small glass an hour before a bath to aid circulation, and before bed to settle the nervous system. Dr. Chauhan also advises always sitting while drinking, sipping rather than gulping, and opting for room temperature or warm water over cold for overall health and well-being.
