Functional nutritionist Reshmi Verma and chief dietitian Gulnaaz Shaikh highlight three common foods and drinks that silently undermine gut health: beer, tetra pack instant meals, and coffee on an empty stomach. Beer, beyond its liver impact, disrupts gut bacteria, weakens the gut lining, and increases inflammation, leading to issues like bloating and poor nutrient absorption. Instant meals, though convenient, are laden with preservatives, artificial flavors, and emulsifiers that disturb the gut microbiome, potentially causing sluggish digestion, bloating, and mood alterations over time. Coffee on an empty stomach can spike cortisol, increase stomach acid, and irritate the gut lining, resulting in acidity, bloating, and impaired nutrient absorption. Both experts emphasize that a healthy gut is crucial for overall well-being, influencing mood, energy, skin, immunity, and hormones. They recommend starting the day with water, prioritizing fresh whole foods, incorporating fiber-rich foods and fermented items, and limiting or avoiding alcohol to nurture gut health.
