Batman is making people better: Research finds the strangely kind effect the fictional character has on strangers

A study conducted on the Milan metro found that commuters were significantly more likely to offer a seat to a woman appearing pregnant when a person dressed as Batman was present. The research, published in npj Mental Health Research, showed a jump from about 38% to 67% in helping behaviour when the superhero costume appeared, even though many passengers later said they hadnt consciously noticed Batman. Scientists say the “Batman effect” works because unexpected events disrupt routine, making people more aware of their surroundings and more sensitive to others needs.
