Scientists at CSIR – National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram have developed “designer rice,” a high-protein, low glycemic index alternative to regular white rice by reprocessing broken rice into a fortified grain with over three times the protein and added nutrients like iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Unlike traditional rice, which is high in starch and can spike blood sugar, this version releases energy slowly, making it beneficial for people with Type 2 Diabetes and those needing better nutrition. Created without genetic modification and now being commercialised with Tata Consumer Products Limited, it aims to tackle malnutrition and protein deficiency while retaining the taste and cooking properties of regular rice, though experts stress it should complement a balanced diet rather than replace other protein sources.
